In 1924, founder Hugh C. Gardiner Jr, began working at his uncle A.C. Gardiner’s country store which was located at Lothair Station just behind their current location. At the time the business was a large country store that sold everything from dry goods to clothing to hardware. A year later, Hugh acquired the International Harvester contract and began supplying the local farming community with the equipment that would take them from horse to horsepower. His very first tractor sold, a McCormick-Deering 10-20, was to his father, a Waldorf farmer. The transition from horse to tractor farming was complete with the introduction of the Farmall Cub – a one-row cultivating tractor especially suited for the tobacco production of which Southern Maryland was known.
In 1947, Hugh C. Gardiner Jr took over the business and built a new building on U.S. route 301 which is now called Crain Highway. Hugh C. Gardiner III joined the company in 1959 and it was then incorporated as Hugh C. Gardiner, Inc. In 1961, International Harvester came out with the Original Cub Cadet which paved the way for their entry into the outdoor power equipment industry. This was followed by adding quality lines such as Stihl, Ferris, Land Pride and others. In 1990, their inventory went from mostly red to orange when they became a full line Kubota dealer. The companies they have chosen to partner with offer an array of quality options for their farm, homeowner and commercial landscape customers.
Like Southern Maryland, much has changed over the years at Hugh C. Gardiner, Inc. but what has stayed the same are the values taught by their founder and continued now into the third generation of the Gardiner family. Although they are not perfect, it has always been an unwritten rule to provide the best customer experience through honest and fair pricing, friendly and professional service and a true concern for providing the equipment that suits their customer’s needs. For over eighty years now they have genuinely sought to honor these principles in the course of their daily operation and will continue to do so for years to come.
